What this checks
The number’s format: the country prefix and the pattern that country’s VAT numbers follow. Every EU member state plus GB and Northern Ireland has its own rule here. A prefix we hold no rule for returns “this number could not be checked”. It is not measured against a generic pattern that would pass almost anything.
What only the register can answer
Registration. A perfectly formatted number can belong to nobody, or to a different business than the invoice claims. Only the official registers can answer that: HMRC's Check-a-UK-VAT-number service for GB, VIES for the EU.
